Preview – Wycombe vs Wigan

Wycombe Wanderers host Wigan Athletic at Adams Park in a top of the table clash on Tuesday night in League One.

After a thrilling 5-5 draw with Cheltenham Town at the weekend, Wycombe go into the game in good goal scoring form. While Wigan will be looking to get back to winning ways after drawing 1-1 with top of the table Rotherham last time out.

After a flying start to the season, Wycombe are just about holding onto a playoff place with 55 points. Gareth Ainsworth’s side head into the game without a win in their last five games and despite scoring five goals last time out it highlighted The Chairboys defensive frailties. In fact they have the second poorest defensive record of all the teams in the playoff places.

On the other hand, Wigan are currently sat in 2nd place in the league with 63 points in 30 games. Despite drawing with league leaders Rotherham last time out, they will be aiming to close the gap on them by beating Wycombe, however they currently have two games in hand still over The Millers. Liam Richardson’s men will also aim to maintain their excellent away record in the league which has seen them win 33 points in 15 games.

Team News

Wycombe head into the game with no suspensions or injury concerns so Ainsworth has the luxury of picking from a full strength squad.

Striker Sam Vokes is expected to start after his brace against Cheltenham at the weekend took him into double figures for the season.

Meanwhile, Wigan head into the game without Jordan Cousins who’s been out since early December. However, they will have in form Stephen Humphrys and 5th top goal scorer in the league (with 15 goals) Will Keane.

Head to head

In the reverse fixture this season, the sides drew 1-1, so it should be interesting on Tuesday. Wigan will more than likely be expected to win if they want to keep the pressure on Rotherham. But don’t rule Wycombe out as they will want to maintain their play off place.

The fixture on Tuesday will be just the second time The Chairboys and Latics will have faced one another since 2003.
