Sedgley and Gornal aiming to qualify for the first round proper of the Women’s FA Cup

After already equalling their best FA Cup performance since the 2016/17 season, Sedgley and Gornal United are looking to go one step further and create history by reaching the first round proper of the Women’s FA Cup on Sunday.

Standing in Sedgley’s way are Basford United, a team from the tier above, who in their opening four games of the season have won two, drew one and lost one. And in the previous qualifying round of the FA Cup beat Notts County (on penalties).

In order to get to the third and final qualifying round Sedgley have beaten Norton Canes Ladies 14-0 away from home (1st round) and Hereford Pegasus Ladies 4-2 (2nd round). The squad are now aiming one step further to try and get in the hat for the first round proper.

The side have also done well in their opening league matches also. In three games they have won twice and lost once. They currently sit 6th in their league but have two games in hand on some teams above.

Sedgley and Gornal manager Samantha Taylor-Whitehead said: “The girls have been working really hard on and off the pitch the last couple of weeks in the build up to this game.

“The work ethic and attitude of the girls in training has been excellent and has really has an impact on our recent performances, I’m proud of every single one of them and I’m sure they will keep up the high standards on Sunday.

“Some might say it’s a tough draw but I’m certain the hard work everyone in the squad has put in will give us that extra boost. And of course It’s cup football so anything is possible.”

With a successful training week and with no new injuries Sam is expected to have a very strong squad to choose from on Sunday.

Especially up front with Nelia Severin. The forward has scored three goals in her sides opening three matches of the season, and with her pace and skill she could cause the Basford defenders a few problems.

Taylor-Whitehead concluded: “It would be a great feeling to get into the first round proper for myself as manager and also for the girls. But no matter the result we as a squad hope to keep inspiring the next generation of young footballers within our club.”

Ticket prices are £5 for adults, £3 for concessions and £1 for kids.
